I have Mossberg Model 44 US 22 rifle. The serial Number has been grinded off. The new one is NWSCO653. I brought it off of CMP years ago. Can someone help me about the serila number.

- The serial number on the Mossberg 500 is on the left side of the receiver, just below the trigger group pin. However, shotguns were not required to have serial numbers prior to the Gun Control Act of 1968, so yours may fall into that category.

Speculation on Drilled and Tapped Receivers
The theory is that some M44US receivers were drilled and tapped for scope mounting even though the Government contracts never called for them. Also some rifles that were drilled and tapped were marked M44US and some were marked M44US(a). Although the rifles marked M44US(a) do not have all of the civilian features, mainly the adjustable trigger.
